Discouraging Progress Report from Akers

The guy's a perfectionist, so we shouldn't overreact, but after what we saw last year, I think there are legitimate grounds for concern about how Akers is handling this new, post-Koy phase of his career:

As for his training-camp work, Akers described it as "up and down." He said he was not doing a good job of adjusting to the constant change in holders. Dirk Johnson and Sav Rocca have alternated because there is uncertainty as to which one will make the team as the punter.

"For some reason, I'm just not adjusting real well on every kick," Akers said. "I'm happy with the way I'm kicking, but the results aren't really there. I'm off just the littlest bit at times.

"I came from the last minicamp, where I went the last two weeks without missing a kick, to here, where I'm not doing as well. I just wish I could get it all put together. I don't care who's holding. I have to go out and make the kicks."

Maybe next year we'll bring in some guy from the English Premier League to give him more of a push in camp.

*sigh* I miss the good old'days when Akers was healthy and I could count on him in my fantasy league. Damn.

The holding situation does worry me, but Akers needs to realize that the team can't afford to burn a roster spot on his own personal holder anymore.
