Reno's Return

So Reno Mahe has gotten the call, but as of 10:30AM on Tuesday it's still not official.  Besides the physical he has to pass, the other delay by the Eagles has to be figuring out what to do about the roster.  I just don't see a place to cut that won't leave the Eagles dangerously thin, other than the offensive and perhaps defensive lines.

The fact that Reid has kept these 10 linemen around for two years now suggests he really, really doesn't want to let any of them go.  My guess is right now the Eagles are talking to teams that may be in need of some help about possible swinging a trade for Scott Young.  He is the guy most ready to play right now for someone else and least likely to develop into a future pro bowler.  Not that Young's a bad player, but the Eagles aren't going to give up on the potential of a guy like Max Jean-Gilles right now.

If nothing can be worked out on the trade front, the next bet would be Pat McCoy as a permanent move, or maybe Poga Togafau if they can sneak him onto the practice squad for a week or two.

Assuming Reno comes back, this all worked out really well for the guy.  A few months ago he was the guy who couldn't outrun a sundial and was personally holding back our return game.  Now he comes back as the sure-handed veteran arriving to save our special teams.  Not a bad trick.

(Of course, some of us liked him all along.)

I remember an analyst calling Mahe 'a returner with training wheels.' Sure, he was unspectacular, but he held onto the ball. Bloom didn't turn into the explosive returner we all thought he'd be (Reid included) and looked one hit away from being permanently out of football (like a ten year old playing against pros).

Here's a stat I never would have guessed.... According to Ron Burke on Comcast's Sportsrise this morning, Reno Mahe was the leading punt returner for average in 2005. Not bad for a guy with training wheels.
