Just the Stats

Posted by Derek

Here's some statistical backup for the next post on running the ball.  The two tables show the running attempts, yards gained and averages for both the Eagles and Redskins throughout the first eight games of the season.

Runcorrelation

The first thing that jumps out at me is how consistent the Eagles are.  Every game has been between 18 and 28 attempts.  Contrast that with the Redskins, who had a low of 15 and a high of 46(!).

But what's even more amazing is the correlation analysis I ran on the two teams.  Check out the correlation between attempts and average.  For the Eagles, the number is 0.125, which basically means there's no correlation there.  Running is a set portion of the gameplan, and once Westbrook hits his magic number, that's it, shut it down, no matter how successful it's been.

The correlation coefficient for the Redskins is 0.901

Yeah. Exactly.
