Heckert Discussion Questions

Posted by Derek

1.  Based not just on his track record, but also all the work he's done over the past 12 months preparing for this year's draft and free agency -- as well as his intimate knowledge of the Birds' priorities and player evaluations -- how big a blow would it be to lose Tom Heckert to the Falcon?

2a.  If Heckert gets the job in Atlanta and is able to convince Steve Spagnuolo to leave the Giants and become Atlanta's next head coach, does that turn the transaction into a net positive for the Eagles, since they struggled both times against the aggressive New York schemes this year?

2b.  If Eagles' QB coach Pat Shurmur also goes to Atlanta to serve as offensive coordinator, does that then swing it back to negative, given the importance of Kevin Kolb's development for the long-term future of this franchise?

My answers:

1.  Big for this year.  It's hard to gamble when someone else at the table knows what you're holding.  Maybe not a huge deal long term.

2a.  Absolutely.  Spags killed us this year.

2b.  Unsure.  I think Reid and Marty can do just fine, but it might mean Andy's spending more time teaching the guy how to move a safety with his eyes and less time focusing on big-picture things like ... well, his GM duties.
