Oh This Is Great News About Lito
Per PFT:
It's a move that likely will provoke bad memories in Philadelphia.
Per a league source, [IB HINT: RHYMES WITH SCHMOSENMAUS] Eagles cornerback Lito Sheppard has hired agent Drew Rosenhaus.
We’re told that the team and Rosenhaus held an initial meeting on Wednesday, and that both sides hope to avoid a repeat of the ugliness that unfolded in 2005 between the team and another Rosenhaus client, receiver Terrell Owens.
Sheppard has been available via trade ever since the team signed cornerback Asante Samuel, formerly of the Patriots. But no deal has been even close, and there has been no serious talk regarding a new contract for Sheppard in Philly.
Sheppard is due to earn a base salary of $2 million in 2008, which is less than 10 percent of the value of Samuel’s guaranteed money in his Eagles contract, which runs through 2011.

Ok, my main reaction is "****, not this **** again."
But is PFT comparing the amount of money Lito will make THIS YEAR to the amount Asante is guaranteed OVER HIS WHOLE CONTRACT? Or am I just reading it wrong.
I know that means Asante is still making quite a bit more than Lito this year, but the way they wrote this seems to make it look even more of a difference than it really is, and doesn't take into account all the money the Eagles have already paid Lito Sheppard.

I believe Lito signed a 5 year deal with ~25 mil. Samuel's was a 6 year deal worth ~57 mil. So, basing it strictly off over the course of time, Asante is making about 4 mil more per year. But this is an interesting tid-bit from USA Today.
The base value of Asante Samuel's contract, not including incentives, is $57.14 million. $32.14 million is available in the first three years.
The frontloaded deal included $6 million to sign and $7 million roster bonuses in '08 and '09. His salary leaps from $1.9 million in 2009 to $8.9 million in 2010. Samuel is likely to see that money, but the contract is set up so that it would be fairly painless to cut Samuel after two years if he's struggling.

Sheppard has earned $3.6 million in salary and $12.4 million in bonuses in the NFL. This year he will get $2.5 million in salary. If he makes the pro-bowl again this year, he gets $4 million in 2009.
Samuel has earned $1.6 million in salary, $0.3 million in bonnues, and $7.8 million in franchise guarantees. This year he gets $0.6 million in salary and $13.5 million in bonuses. Next year he will get $9 million in salary and bonuses assuming he isn't cut to save $5 million in cap space.
If you include the net present value of Lito getting his bonuses in 2002 and 2004 vs. Asante getting his in 2008, Lito is ahead. If you consider that much of Asante's earnings was the unexpected gift of the franchise tag (and the subsequent inflation of his resigning by delaying it one year), Sheppard is way ahead in terms of amounts earned by normal contract.
