Peter King Likes Whom?

From MMQB:

g. Most underrated Eagle: Quentin Mikell.

Comments

Is it possible to call an all-pro underrated? I mean, as you said on the right here, he just got his due.

I wrote a long mailbag item to Mr. King asking him why the only thing he has to say about Brian Dawkins is...

"i. Free-agent the Eagles absolutely should not lose: Brian Dawkins. That was his 200th game Sunday, and he played like it was his 20th."

For a write who loves feel good stories, there isn't much better than Dawkins and the passion he is playing with. Did you see him leaving the field on Sunday? Not often you see a professional athlete in tears. The consummate professional in my book.

Yeah, I was actually pretty concerned when Q went out for a little while....but a strange thing happened; Sean Considine came in and made a couple of nice plays. Now, he's worked hard and he IS the special teams captain so it shouldn't be too much to accept that he can fill in nicely. When I saw Q make a nice play at the point of attack the next defensive series, I realized exactly how special this defense has become.

No one should have been too surprised that Q was making plays by the middle of the season. He has always, since he's been here, been a very capable back-up.

Annnnnnnnd he misspelled his name. Which either Gabe or I must point out, since we're the designated PK watchdogs for the Philly area.

Speaking of Dawkins, I didn't want to be the one to bring it up, but Jason Whitlock did:

So underrated, King doesn't know how to properly spell his name.

i was anxious to see whitlock's piece, since he has been a vocal mcnabb supporter all season, and while i find him entertaining, i don't completely agree with his take on reid's playcalling.

early in the game, even if the runs weren't picking up much yardage, i thought it was exactly the right thing to do, if only to show that we were actually going to run. i think that up until the 2 minute drill, we actually had called more running plays than passes. yes, the offense wasn't moving the ball to that point, but given the way the game was playing out, and given how many times we've seen our pass-happy approach to start games backfire, i thought the run-heavy approach early was spot on. and probably had more than a little to do with the giants d line having ZERO sacks for the day.

but yeah, i think he's probably right about dawk and his susceptibility in the passing game...

Whitlock is right about Dawk. And Derek, I don't think you were the only one deciding NOT to mention it. Every down the field throw made by Manning he was two steps behind. Hey, we all love the guy. I hate the saying, but it is what it is. You know Johnson will adjust accordingly for Sunday.

I don't think it'll be as much of an issue with Dawkins vs. the Cardinals. The difference is gonna be how the Cardinals approach the offense. With the Giants, Dawk had to be mindful of the run on every short yardage play. Nobody wanted to see Jacobs or Ward start cutting huge tracts of real estate into the defense. With the Cardinals, the run game isn't the bread and butter so I don't think that Johnson's emphasis with Dawkins will be there.. Warner is still gonna get some nice ones in there, probably every quarter, but with nicely timed pressure and extra safety help, the Birds will be alright.

I think the Eagles Dline and those LBs will handle James and Hightower.

bigmyc,
agree fully with you. i think the front 7 should be able to handle the james/hightower combo by themselves, and would love to see dawk make fitzgerald, boldin, or breaston pay for going over the middle of the field....

Wow. They still haven't updated it. That's horrible. This isn't like one of us missing a typo. They have an editorial staff and everything.

They may not have noticed yet, or cared.

Dawkins is becoming one of those guys who may be a liability in coverage at times, but is HUGE in setting the defensive tone. He intimidated the Giants on that first defensive series. All that jawing they kept getting up and doing, it all came down to "yo Brian, don't play so rough, that hurt."
