So Now We Have To Worry About Andrews [And Sheldon]

Posted by Derek

[Update:  See the comments for news on Sheldon Brown.  Awesome.]

One slightly discordant note in this whole Jason Peters thing is exactly what it all says about Shawn Andrews.  One can certainly argue that when a player of Peters' caliber goes on the market at a position of need, you have to go get him, but Reid's comments yesterday make it sound like Peters was simply Plan A:

On how this affects his draft board and how he factored the draft into the decision: "You leave the good players at the top. There are some very good offensive tackles in this draft. The tackles are going to go very high. For you to get from 21 to the top five or six or seven pick, that's going to use up quite a bit to get there. Then it's a 50/50 shot from there. We had an opportunity to get somebody who is proven and has done it in this league and actually played against the NFC East and was successful playing against the NFC East. We didn't feel that the compensation there was too great to do at all. We feel like it really worked out well for us."

It's that time of year when nobody tells the truth, but it's a little disconcerting that the Eagles were even considering blasting their way up the draft order to bring in a big-time LT prospect.  This morning, Peter King proposed that the Redskins give up "first- and third-round picks this year, and a second-rounder next year" just to move from the 13th slot to the 3rd.  And he felt he had to defend that trade in the new obscene guaranteed money era as being fair value.  For the Eagles to have gone up another eight picks was likely going to require both firsts -- or simply not have happened.

To make a deal like that when you have a Pro Bowler in house who played tackled in college ready to go at that position?  It would make you wonder...

Les Bowen -- not someone who just makes stuff up -- isn't helping my digestion today:

Shawn Andrews, often an isolated figure in the locker room, now will dress alongside his brother and his close friend, which has to be a better environment for him.

But Shawn might not find it all that much fun to compare paychecks; in 2006, he signed an extension that locked him up for 10 seasons, during which he will make about $35.5 million. [Ed. note:  Peters' total Philly package has been reported as six years, $60 million.]

When Shawn Andrews missed the start of training camp last season with what turned out to be severe depression, there was speculation that he was unhappy with his contract. Agent Rich Moran denied that, but the speculation continued, as Andrews missed the final 14 regular-season games and the playoffs with a back injury.

Shawn Andrews did not respond to messages from the Daily News this past weekend. Moran texted yesterday that Andrews would "be at work" for offseason conditioning at NovaCare tomorrow. He did not comment on how Andrews felt about his deal.

I'm tired of offseason dramas that take the focus away from preparing to win games.  (Although, hypocritically, I'm quite happy with offseason dramas in other cities that resolve with the Eagles acquiring a formerly disgruntled player.)  Here's hoping nothing strange is going on with Shawn these days.
