Otis Smith Out The Door
Posted by Derek |
This morning, shlynch, as usual, noticed something a little strange:
Speaking of turnover ... when did Otis Smith get axed from the Eagles' coaching staff? Anyone know?
This afternoon, Les Bowen confirmed the (unannounced) change:
Eagles assistant secondary coach Otis Smith is no longer with the team, an Eagles spokesman confirmed Wednesday. No further information was offered...
The Eagles recently brought in former Cowboys defensive coordinator Brian Stewart to assist McDermott, mainly with the secondary. It's unclear whether that move had anything to do with Smith's departure. Smith worked all of the OTAs, or minicamps, this spring.
In my copy of the MSM / Blogger dictionary, "it's unclear whether" translates into "youbetcherbutt." Although the direction of the causality is still in question. Did Smith quit because he was annoyed at getting bounced down the ladder ... or was getting bounced down the ladder the result of the Eagles not thinking he was (as yet) much of a coach?
It's possible, obviously, that the Eagles were fine with him but just saw Brian Stewart as too good an opportunity to pass up. I'm guessing the day Otis gets his next job, we'll find out more.
And is it as hard for everyone else to hear the words "Otis Smith" without immediately hearing "... and Izel (Toast) Jenkins"? Or is that just me?
Even during the NBA Finals that was happening.
