Don't Sweat It, Les; We Had Your Back On Twitter

Posted by BountyBowl

It may be three days until training camp, but Eagles fans -- or at least the creepy subcategory thereof who chooses to post comments on Philly.com -- are already in mid-season form.

Who knew that a fairly innocuous post by Les Bowen on Eagletarian that gently poked fun at the lack of fresh information contained in Donovan McNabb's latest missive on Yardbarker would prompt an onslaught of comments on Philly.com that accused Les of everything from dissing McNabb for having a family to being "cranky" and "bitter"?  (There was also a meta-argument regarding the porn star thing, but we'll table that for the moment.)

Usually, Les lets this sort of thing slide, but I guess he returned from vacation especially refreshed and ready for duty, because he updated the original post with the following:

A little clarification. I cover the Eagles. Their quarterback blogs. I figured people might be interested in the fact that he blogged about the receivers coming out to Arizona. I posted a blog item about this. In it, I joked about his use of the word "regiment" instead of "regimen," which I thought was funny, as a typo, malapropism, or whatever. I noted that he didn't tell us a lot about who was there and exactly what they did, because, well, because he didn't tell us a lot about who was there and exactly what they did.

In no way did I make fun of him for having a family (???!!!) I was not and am not "bitter." I'm pretty sure most sane people who follow my work here, in the paper, and on Daily News Live would not characterize me that way. As far as I know, I have a pretty cordial relationship with Donovan, more cordial than many local reporters.

But you guys go on and have fun among yourselves, don't mind me.Except when it comes to making up stuff I didn't say.

You tell 'em, Les!  For the record, I made a Tweet about all this when I first saw the comments yesterday:

WOW. It took the haters ~10 minutes to escalate the Haterade in the Philly.com comments on Les Bowen's latest Eagletarian piece. Yikes.

There was even a little exchange between @BleedingGreenNation and me about it, in which we both agreed on the extreme horribleness of the Philly.com comments.  All on Twitter.

Your takeaways:

1.  Football season is here!  The beat writers are back from vacation, and the haters are in effect (even in the midst of the most glorious stretch of baseball since last October).  Can't wait to hear what everyone says when something actually happens.

2.  Twitter -- like much of the Internet -- is a very exciting place to say snarky things about the snarky things that other people have said.  I'm admittedly a bit player, but it's growing on me, and I think it's actually going to be a useful way to follow news about the Birds/ the NFL.  At the very least, if you're on it, we hope you'll come check us out.
