In case you were watching the Phils last night or have better things to do with your time than watch preseason NFL games that don't even involve the team you support, I might suggest you check out the highlights of last night's Broncos - Bears game, if only to see a certain rangy safety patrolling the Denver secondary.
Yes yes, I know this sort of thing happens all the time and that it's just the way things go in professional sports and that it was Dawk's decision to leave as much as it was the Eagles, yadda yadda. But that doesn't change the part where I'm going to miss rooting for Brian Dawkins. Especially when he's out there flying around with a cast on his hand in a game that doesn't mean anything.
After a bit of prodding at today's presser, even Quintin Mikell fessed up to a little nostalgia for Dawkins (note also the bit in the article about the writers missing him too):
“It was really weird, that orange jersey on and stuff, it was a little different seeing him," Mikell said. "It was fun watching him play. He was flying around out there and having fun and playing physical.”
So did watching Dawkins play make Mikell wish that No. 20 was still an Eagle?
“You don’t want to get caught up in that," Dawkins [sic -- I assume he meant Mikell] said. "I will say it was a little nostalgic sitting here [thinking], ‘I remember those hits’ and stuff like that. It was a little weird but I’m happy with the situation that we’re in and I’m sure he’s happy. It’s the position we’re in. We just have to move on.”
And sure, we all knew that this day -- the first time one would see Dawk in a Broncos uniform -- was coming for some time, but that doesn't make it any less sudden:
Dr. Joseph Dolan:
You know, it's a shame about Ed.
Fletch: Oh, it was. Yeah, it was really a shame. To go so suddenly like that.
Dr. Joseph Dolan: He was dying for years.
Fletch: Sure, but... the end was very... very sudden.
Dr. Joseph Dolan: He was in intensive care for eight weeks.
Fletch: Yeah, but I mean the very end, when he actually died. That was extremely sudden.
